The Johns Island Advocate is a biweekly newsletter that seeks to inform Islanders of events impacting our Island. This information will hopefully allow Islanders to more effectively engage with fellow Islanders to impact positive changes for John Island.
As our name implies, in the newsletter we will provide information on upcoming events as well as advocate for our vision for Johns Island. Fundamentally this vision is to save the soul of our Island.
Specifically, our vision is that:
- Johns Island within the Urban Growth Boundary (UGB) (about 20% of the Island) is a livable community of connected neighborhoods with a Lowcountry vibe and an inviting main street (Maybank Highway) lined with local businesses designed in the Johns Island vernacular.
- Johns Island outside the UGB (about 80% of the Island) is rural, with farms, settlement communities, wildlife, low density housing, connected landscapes, access to salt water, large swaths of protected land, and abundant tree canopies.
- And throughout Johns Island our children have access to a quality education and abundant recreation, our road infrastructure is effective and context sensitive, and the design of our homes and businesses is sensitive to our culture and environment.
