The Johns Island Advocate is a free, bi-weekly email newsletter and an associated website. It is a Johns Island-based, grassroots, all volunteer endeavor. It is not affiliated with any other organization and is entirely self-funded. To maintain its independence, outside funds are not accepted.
The Johns Island Advocate came into existence to keep residents informed. Hence the tagline: "The future of Johns Island depends upon an informed citizenry". The first edition of the Advocate went out to 750 subscribers on February 22, 2022. Since then it has grown to over 2,900 subscribers. About 70% of those subscribers are from Johns or Wadmalaw Islands, about 25% are from Kiawah or Seabrook Islands, and the remainder are primarily from other areas of Charleston County.
As our name implies, we take advocacy positions for smart growth on Johns Island and to maintain the rural character of the Island outside the Urban Growth Boundary. When issues impacting Johns Island arise, we encourage subscribers to email and call their councilmembers, to attended and speak up at Council, Planning Commission, and Board of Zoning Appeals meetings, to attend community meetings, to respond to surveys, and to vote.
The Advocate does not endorse political candidates, but it does keep readers informed on how Councilmembers vote.
The Advocate is published by John Zlogar, a Charleston County resident since 2014 and a Johns Island resident since 2015. Prior to that he lived in Atlanta for over 30 years and experienced what unchecked development can do to the character of a region.
