Sea Islands Outreach OrganizationS

  • Backpack Buddies Seabrook Island:  Their mission is to feed hungry children living below the poverty line attending Charleston County public schools.
  • Barrier Islands Free Medical Clinic:  They provide free health care to uninsured adults who live or work across the Barrier Islands.
  • Berkeley Electric Operation Roundup:  They provide funds for home repairs, HVAC repair or replacement, wheelchair ramps)
  • Kiawah Woman's Foundation Backpack Buddies:  Their mission is to provide for children in underserved communities on Johns and Wadmalaw Islands. 
  • Our Lady of Mercy Community Outreach:  They work to address the root causes of poverty and create systemic change by providing basic and emergency resources, education, job assistance and health services.  
  • Reading Partners (at Angel Oak and Mount Zion Elementary Schools):  They are a national nonprofit that mobilizes communities to provide students with the proven, individualized reading support they need to read at grade level by fourth grade. 
  • Sea Island Habitat for Humanity:  They bring people together to build homes, communities, and hope. 
  • Sea Islands Hunger Awareness Foundation / Sea Island Water Wellness Mission:   Their mission is to fight island hunger and provide clean water for the residents of Johns and Wadmalaw Islands. 
  • Swerve Nations Community Foundation:  Their focus is on the youth and overall services of the Sea Islands by making the maximum positive effort for our communities.   Their vision will blend the local surrounding communities into a nation of diversity and inclusion that will make a long-lasting difference.

  •  Conservation Voters of South Carolina:  Environmental policy and advocacy.  Works with partners and coalitions, and legislative relationships to advance change and build consensus
  • League of Woman Voters of South Carolina:  Encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. 

Gullah Geechee and African AMerican ORGANIZATIONS

  • African American Settlement Community Historic Commission:  Protect and preserve the Gullah history, culture and land
  • Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture (College of Charelston):  Collecting, preserving, and promoting the unique history and culture of the African diaspora 
  • Center for Heirs' Property Preservation:  Protects heirs’ property and promotes its sustainable use to provide increased economic benefit to historically under-served families. 
  • Gullah Farmers Cooperative Association:  Establish to provide a profitable, significant local food market for farmer-members who are honoring and continuing the agricultural traditions of the Gullah community 
  • Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor:  A National Heritage Area and established by Congress to recognize the unique culture of the Gullah Geechee people who have traditionally resided in the coastal areas and the sea islands of  NC, SC, GA, and FL.

  • Friends of the Edisto / Edisto Riverkeeper:   Edisto Riverkeeper with friends of the Edisto serves as the primary advocate for the Edisto River, working to ensure fair access to drinkable, fishable, swimmable water throughout the Edisto Basin 
  • Surfrider Foundation Charleston:  The local chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, a grass-roots nonprofit protecting beaches, oceans, and waterways across the United States.

  • Carolina Wetlands Association:  A science- based organization advocating for wetlands in the Carolinas.
  • South Carolina Beach Advocates:  Educate the public, governmental authorities, and elected officials as to the environmental, economic, and societal impact of South Carolina's beaches and inlets.  The board of directors is made up of mayors and administrators of  beach communities. 
  • South Carolina Sea Grant Consortium:   A state agency established to manage the NOAA National Sea Grant College Program for South Carolina.   Their purpose is to generate and provide science-based information on issues and opportunities to improve the social and economic well-being of coastal residents while ensuring the optimal use and conservation of marine and coastal natural resources
